Grey’s Anatomy – The Complete Season 5 on DVD

Greys Anatomy Season 5

Greys Anatomy Season 5

Season 5 is a pivotal one for the riveting Grey’s Anatomy. The doctors at Seattle Grace Hospital bloom and show new layers, the drama meets and exceeds that of previous seasons, and the show marks an important milestone–its 100th episode–with developments that, as with all the great Grey’s episodes, brim with belly laughs and moving tears.

The season gets off to a slow start, with perhaps a bit more relationship angst than even diehard fans would prefer. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek “McDreamy” (Patrick Dempsey) start out with the familiar push-pull of their love affair–but a resolution, at last, is in their future. Callie (the excellent, and newly glamorous, Sara Ramirez) wrestles with her sexual orientation. Cristina (Sandra Oh, never better) is still picking up the pieces from her ruined engagement to the departed Burke (Isaiah Washington). To help her, or maybe to throw her for another loop, the series introduces the gruff, macho military doc, Owen (one of TV’s sexiest hunks, Kevin McKidd).

Yet series creator and still active writer Shonda Rhimes unveils story arcs about midway through the season which have the surgeons’ operating room dramas intersecting with the characters’ private lives–with waves of heartbreaking results. Fans may take issue with “Dead Denny” (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his endless visitations–complete with sex–with Izzie (Katherine Heigl)–but as the season builds, Izzie’s mystery illness, and her deep love for Alex (Justin Chambers) are treated with delicacy and respect, and Denny’s character both reacts and ultimately supports. There’s a wedding–a fairy-tale one–celebrating the show’s 100th episode, and the love of the characters, and the pain they’ve overcome to get there–are equal parts of the very human, very lovely, result. The season finale is among the show’s best ever, with the fate of two beloved characters, George (T.R. Knight) and Izzie, left unknown and laden with sorrow. –A.T. Hurley

Dear John

Dear John

Director Lasse Hallström and screenwriter Jamie Linden collaborate to adapt author Nicholas Sparks’ novel about a young soldier who falls for an idealistic college girl. Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried) was on spring break when she first met John Tyree (Channing Tatum), who was home on temporary leave. For the smitten soldier it was practically love at first sight. Over the course of the next seven years, when each deployment seemed more treacherous than the last, the love letters that Savannah sent to John were one of the only things that kept him going. However, those loving and heartfelt correspondences would ultimately yield consequences that neither the brave soldier nor his one true love could have ever foreseen.

Suddenly, condemned arch-swindler Moist von Lipwig found himself with a noose around his neck and dropping through a trapdoor into…a government job? By all rights, Moist should be meeting his maker rather than being offered a position as Postmaster by Lord Vetinari, supreme ruler of Ankh-Morpork. Getting the moribund Postal Service up and running again, however, may prove an impossible task, what with literally mountains of decades-old undelivered mail clogging every nook and cranny of the broken-down post office. Worse still, Moist could swear the mail is talking to him. Worst of all, it means taking on the gargantuan, greedy Grand Trunk Clacks communication monopoly and its bloodthirsty piratical headman. But if the bold and undoable are what’s called for, Moist’s the man for the job–to move the mail, continue breathing, get the girl, and specially deliver that invaluable commodity that every being, human or otherwise, requires: hope.

Lavish television adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s hugely popular novel Going Postal, part of the Discworld series.

It’s June 1982, and Israel is launching an invasion of Lebanon. Four men assigned to take part in the first strike are put on the same tank detail — Assi (Itay Tiran) is the commanding officer, Shmulik (Yoab Donat) is a gunner new to the outfit, Hertzel (Oshri Cohen) keeps the weapons loaded, and Yigal (Michael Moshonov) drives the machine. After being given their orders by Jamil (Zohar Strauss), the men set out towards the Lebanese border, recognizing little of what goes on outside beyond what can be seen through Yigal’s tiny window; they occasionally stop to help fellow Israelis hurt in battle, but for the most part, they roll relentlessly onward, occasionally arguing amongst themselves, until they arrive at their destination, a town already bombed into rubble by the Israeli Air Force. Few of their allies remain in the city, putting the soldiers in a perilous situation when a band of Syrian resistance fighters lay siege to the tank.

Tin Can Trust by Los Lobos

Tin Can Trust by los Lobos

Tin Can Trust by los Lobos

Over the course of a recording career that’s poised to enter its fourth decade, Los Lobos are a band who have never shied away from writing about folks struggling to make their way through hard times, and one might argue that in the wake of America’s financial meltdown and a recession that won’t seem to go away, the rest of the United States is starting to catch up with the East L.A. barrios that have been the locale of the group’s most powerful songs. The title cut on Tin Can Trust, Los Lobos’ 14th studio album, collects the thoughts of a guy trying to make ends meet collecting cans and bottles, whose wardrobe consists of “a dime store shirt/and two bucks for a good pair,” and it’s a song that carries more weight than usual in a time where seemingly everyone is havingtrouble getting by. But later in the same number, the same character tells the woman he loves “I can give you one thinga man can bring,” and it’s hardly the only moment on Tin Cast Trust where this band of survivors has something to say about simple determination in the face of bad luck. On Tin Can Trust, some folks are trying to repair broken love affairs, others are hoping to outrun hatred and bad luck, and a feware struggling to sort out just where their culture and their history have left them. The musicians in Los Lobos are too smart to think they have the answers to all the questions they pose, but they’re clever enough to know that sometimes giving them a good, long ponder can help, and on songs like “Burn It Down,” “Jupiter or the Moon,” and “27 Spanishes” they offer some powerful food for thought that happens to havesome great music attached. Tin Can Trust captures this exceptional band in truly great form the guitar interplay between David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas shows both men are playing at the top of their game, bassist Conrad Lozano and drummer Louie Perez are a strong and soulful rhythm section, and Steve Berlin’s keys and sax add just the right coloring. These performances are low on ego-driven flash but high on exciting, emotionally compelling music, and as Los Lobos try to sortout what’s happening in their neighborhood (and our nation), they still find some room to celebrate a good, sunny day (“On Main Street”) and the power of a righteous guitar rave-up (“Do the Murray”). On Tin Cast Trust, Los Lobos prove thattough times don’t last, but tough music does, and those arewords we can all live by.

BBC Review

In the years between Rage Against the Machine’s post-Battle of Los Angeles split and their triumphant, chart-topping revival, there was talk of a solo record from frontman Zack de la Rocha. Saul Williams said it was brilliant. DJ Shadow and Company Flow were involved. On paper, everything suggested the end product would be incredible. Then, nothing. Truth be told, the silence was probably for the best: expectations can crush many a release, and de la Rocha was never likely to escape the shadow of his since reunited bandmates.

Travie McCoy has no such worries. As the lead vocalist of rap-rock middleweights Gym Class Heroes, New Yorkers who peaked commercially with 2006′s As Cruel as Schoolchildren LP, he’s hardly a pop force. Indeed, one could read the title of this debut solo collection as acknowledgement of his slide from chart status–that was then, but this is now and the present is going to see him reborn, ready to conquer the mainstream all over again. And he well might. But it won’t be pretty.

Lead single Billionaire is certain to crack the top five come Sunday’s countdown, but its cod reggae vibe is horribly dated and McCoy’s lyrics both borish and boring. Exhibitionism disguised as aspiration is nothing new in rap, but the bizarre recession-beating braggadocio on display here leaves a distinctly sour aftertaste. A comparable effort, lyrically, is Justin Timberlake and Snoop Dogg’s excellent Signs–but where that 2005 hit sparkled with Neptunes savvy, McCoy and track partner Bruno Mars are, on this form, more likely to be watching Dulwich Hamlet lose at home on a soggy autumn afternoon than basking in the glow of another Venus or Serena victory in the “Wimbledon arena”.

While Mars fails to contribute the same magic that made B.o.B’s Nothin’ on You a smash, another collaborator fares better. Opener Dr. Feelgood is lifted to new heights by a typically soar-away Cee-Lo Green performance–the Gnarls Barkley/Goodie Mob emcee slips between up-tempo beats with a spotlight-stealing chorus. A fun breakdown as the track enters its final third is reminiscent of the old-school R&B values of Janelle Mone’s The ArchAndroid LP–but further parallels with such classics are in short supply.

McCoy employs too many disparate styles–heavy rock on Superbad (11:34); a Hard Knock Life-echoing schoolyard skip on Akidagain; Guetta/will.i.am ‘good time’ sounds on After Midnight; Jason Derulo-trumping Auto-Tune vocals on The Manual–for Lazarus to hold any attention for more than a fleeting period. He also commits to commercial release a repulsive reinterpretation of Supergrass’ 1995 hit Alright–it should have been aborted at the earliest possible stage. Stepping out alone might have seemed a smart idea on paper, but these 10 tracks are every bit as memorable as those that de la Rocha left in the studio, and T-Pain sure isn’t El-P.

Art Academy: Learn Painting and Drawing Techniques

If you dream of becoming the latest Picasso or fancy brushing up on your artistic skills, now’s your chance as the Nintendo DS Touch Screen transforms into your very own canvas. Art Academy: Learn painting and drawing techniques with step-by-step training gives both budding and experienced artists simple and creative tips and tricks to improve, enhance and even learn how to draw and paint.

Whatever your ability, you’ll find the step-by-step approach to lessons easy to follow. Art Academy offers lessons and art materials to get you started on your initial artistic journey, as well as more advanced art courses for those more adventurous artists wanting to take their art to the next level.

The helpful tutor, Vince, is on hand to show you how to use the art materials and what to draw, as well as teaching you art theory and techniques to explore independently. Some lessons are inspired by work from famous artists such as Albrecht Dürer (German), Paul Cézanne (French), Leonardo da Vinci (Italian), Jan van Huysum (Dutch), John Constable (English) and many more to get your creative juices flowing.

The Touch Screen on the Nintendo DS console enables you to effortlessly paint or draw with realistically-behaving paints and pencils. The pencils come in three different grades of lead: 2B, HB, 2H and also enable you to draw in soft or hard lines to blend and layer your pencil mark. Learn to use the eraser function to create interesting effects and, of course, unlike with a real life painting, should you make any mistakes, these can easily be erased without wasting any paper. The paint function behaves similarly to acrylic paint. The paintbrush set comes in three round or flat brushes allowing you to paint in thick or thin lines simply using your Nintendo DS stylus.

Ten paint tubes make up the game’s basic paint palette and there are 20 empty spaces for you to mix your own original colours. You can also control the amount of paint on your brush to give different effects such as dry brushing, and the level of brush wetness which will affect the transparency of paint to allow for a variety of painting effects in your artwork. Zoom in to your masterpieces to perfect the finer details close up and why not take advantage of the grid function, to help you achieve the right scale and proportions?

Use the Free Paint mode to allow you to freestyle your artwork, letting your imagination run wild and check out the material library for a wide range of stock images to get you inspired. If you are a Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL owner, why not also use your built-in camera to capture images and redraw them at leisure. With such realistic artist training, you can use your Nintendo DSi & Nintendo DSi XL to help improve painting and drawing skills in real life!
